Is The Smallpox Back?

It has a cute new name, "monkeypox" and the alphabet people are hardest hit:

Monkeypox Hits Europe

I especially like how the article describes the virus as "mild", with only "1 out 10 people" dying, but actually the new strain is even milder, with less than 1 out of 100% dying, much like the original Wuhan Covid strain, but not really dangerous for anyone who doesn't have a prolonged physical contact with an infected person. I do seriously hope there will be no new lockdowns...

So, The Force Was Real After All???

Scientists are debating a bizarre philosophical theory that everything in the universe has consciousness.

There are two prevalent theories for consciousness – monism and dualism. In monism, generally preferred by scientists, consciousness is believed to be entirely a construct of the physical brain.

While religious people and traditionalists tend towards dualism, the belief consciousness is entirely separate from matter or the human body.

Panpsychism is a third theory which describes consciousness as inherent in all matter; both living and inanimate.

Rather than being borne by the human brain or completely separate from it, consciousness exists in all things, even a chair or rock, and some believe that there is one basic consciousness that exists throughout the universe.

As a "religious person" I don't see any contradiction, when God created the universe why couldn't He have given it some "basic consciousness" as well?

Carbs Aren't Bad For You

Or rather, not all carbs are bad for you:

Potato Diet Challenge

“Make your food boring and your life interesting.” That’s one lesson Andrew Flinders Taylor points out in a Youtube video he posted in December 2016, where he detailed all of the things he learned after eating potatoes for every meal, every single day, for almost a year.

An all-potato diet sounds crazy, but for Taylor, who weighed in at 334 pounds when his experiment began, it led to noticeable results. The Australian native dropped 117 pounds after one year of what he calls his “Spud Fit Challenge.”

Americans And Abortion

Contrary to what Pro-Lifers will tell you, the majority of the Americans of all races supports legal abortion, except White Evangelicals (yes, even Catholics who like to present themselves as sooo traditional and so much better than the Protestants). Also, the Boomers who everybody loves to hate nowadays, are much more conservative in their views on the issue:

Sizable gaps by age, partisanship in views of whether abortion should be legal

That includes 60% of the moderate Republicans, 72% of "conservative" Democrats and nearly 60% of the men.  These views have hardly changed in 30 years:

A chart showing Americans’ views of abortion, 1995-2022

In other words, liberalism still enjoys a broad support in the USA, and I presume in other Western countries, too. You can blame the elites, the bankers, immigration, "special people", the mass media and whatever you wish. I blame the lack of faith:

Religion a significant factor in attitudes about whether abortion should be legal

As you can see, 97% of atheists support it...

What Happened To Dalrock?

It's been more than 2 years since he quit blogging and got pretty much forgotten I guess, but recently I stumbled upon an internet rumour (which I won't link to), that he was "run off" the internet by a group of dedicated "Christian" (read "Catholic") "anti-racist" bloggers and Redditors for being a part of the "alt-right", and that the same people were behind VD's blog being shut down.

Now, one could argue that VD's views on race are rather controversial by the modern standards, but I have yet to remember one post by Dal which had to do with this topic or criticise any race in particular. It was all women bad and chivalry and how you shouldn't marry as far as I can remember and that's what the discussions used to be about, too.

I often disagreed with him, but should admit that I miss him since I often got ideas from his blog as to what to write about and now I have to think of something myself every time and it's a bother:)

If the story above is true, he must have really got under somebody's skin with his posts and yet, his blog wasn't taken down and you still can find it. Of course, with VD they didn't succeed, either, as he's back on his own network and could be followed on Gab, too. It could be that Dalrock got threats and harassment and that forced him to quit or it could be just the wishful thinking on the part of his enemies.

Any thoughts?

Are European Laws Too Lenient?

As a certain internet celebrity says, let's find out!

Some time ago we became victims of a cyber crime. So we went to police to report it. It took us close to 3 hours and cost my husband a free afternoon. The police were very helpful. They told us it was a serious crime with the punishment being 5 years in prison, which is quite strict by our standards. However, they said, it was not up to them to open an investigation, the decision had to be taken by the prosecutor's office.

When I left them, I wasn't very hopeful. I had a neighbour once who moved over here from Southern Europe and her wallet was stolen, with all the documents and her debit card. The thieves emptied her bank account and later she had to go back to her country for the new documents, but the prosecutor had decided not to open an investigation, because, and here I quote the official letter she showed me, the crime was not important enough.

Well, what do you think? Our crime was apparently more important as about a week later we got a letter informing us that the investigation was started and that we would be notified of its progress. However. Several days later another letter came. The department higher up decided that the investigation should not proceed because reasons. Luckily, we got restitution from the insurance.

So here you have it. Our laws are reasonably strict. 5 years is quite a bit for fraud, but it could be death penalty for all I know and it wouldn't make any difference, if you refuse to investigate and prosecute the crimes. Pretty much the only thing which gets investigated is assault and murder (attempt). The laws are used very selectively, often depending on who the victim is. We call it class justice if you know what I mean:)

It's by design, too. There is some sort of gentlemen's agreement not to enforce the existing laws. I believe such a system is called anarcho-tyranny...

Liberation Day

Today is Liberation Day here in the Netherlands, so we watched this movie:

Still funny after all these years:)
