The Real Toxic Femininity

While your smartphone is spying on you, your lipstick is killing you, slowly:

More than half of popular cosmetics being sold in the US and Canada are likely to contain high levels of toxic chemicals called polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a new study has warned.

Researchers from Notre Dame University tested more than 200 products including concealers, foundations, eye and eyebrow products and lip products, and found evidence of PFAS in around half (52 per cent) of them.

Guys, beware:

Worryingly, previous research has linked certain PFAS to a range of health issues, including kidney cancer, testicular cancer, hypertension, thyroid disease, low birth weight and immunotoxicity in children.

Professor Graham Peaslee, who led the study, said: 'PFAS is a persistent chemical - when it gets into the bloodstream, it stays there and accumulates.

Apparently, it's killing the environment, too:

'There's also the additional risk of environmental contamination associated with the manufacture and disposal of these products, which could affect many more people.'

I'm glad I hardly ever use it, last time I bought a lipstick and a tube of skin cream it was from an organic store, but now I'm not sure whether they could be trusted, either...

  1. Most of the cosmetics contain chemicals harmful to us. Still women love to use makeup.

  2. That's basically the reason I stopped using make-up, I remember reading a similar article in Daily Mail years ago.

  3. When I think of 'toxic femininity', I'm reminded of all those TLC episodes where the wife poisons the husband for some paltry amount of insurance money. :)

  4. Well, apparently sometimes just kissing him is enough:)

  5. I don't use much makeup, but I am a lip balm addict. I try to stick with "healthy" brands like Burt's Bees, but who knows?

Interestingly, I couldn't find any list of brands which contain these PFAS. The only makeup I use semi-regularly is a concealer that is not a cheap drug store brand. I will be very annoyed to learn it has toxic chemicals in it.

Ostensibly, paying good money for the better product SHOULD minimize the chance of things like this, right?

  6. Funny, because I have a Burt's Bees lipstick, too:)
I'm trying to buy organic brands of things like shampoo and tooth paste myself, but I have been wondering about containers, which are still from plastic.

I should say I found a toothpaste which comes in a glass jar, so I think it should be fine. I just don't trust plastics any more, unfortunately sometimes you can't avoid them...
