Do We Shower Too Much?

 That's an interesting topic;)

The case for showering less

Overcleaning your body is probably not a compelling health issue. Yes, you could be making your skin drier than it would be with less frequent showering. This is not a public health menace. However, daily showers do not improve your health, could cause skin problems or other health issues — and, importantly, they waste a lot of water. Also, the oils, perfumes, and other additives in shampoos, conditioners, and soaps may cause problems of their own, such as allergic reactions (not to mention their cost).

Thoughts?

  1. I'm in South Texas where it is almost summer most of the year when it is not even summer. I go outside and work a couple hours and then come in and rinse off quickly but only soap the parts that matter at that moment. I feel so much better after rinsing. I try to wash my hair at least once a week. I like sit outside on a weekend afternoon and grill, so some washing is needed. During winter a do so a bit less since I don't sweat as much. I am descended from Slavs, so I probably should have been in a colder climate. Haha!

  2. Yeah, I shower more in summer, too. I just wonder if all these soaps and shampoos are so good for you...

  3. I think deep cleansing especially of hair is not necesssry daily and can be over drying. However, I think a daily shower, even a brief one, is a wonderful ritual that refreshes the spirit and prepares you for the day ahead (if a morning shower) or for a good nights sleep (an evening shower) . There are many tallow based soaps that not only enrich the skin but bring about a lovely scent . A post shower coconut oil smoothing is also a wonderful daily practice ;) plus smelling lovely is so pleasant for us and others

  4. I've never been convinced that man made chemically infused shampoos do any good for your hair. Cold water deliveries all the benefits of shiny healthy hair with no consequences... except it's cold.

  5. Anon, I think may be organic soaps are better but even the best of them still have some funny ingredients, don't they?

  6. Edward, I think plain water works better on men's hair because it's often so short. Mine is long and started looking terrible after some time. Through the years I tried so many shampoo substitutes but the only one which works for me, more or less is egg+yogurt combo, which my mother told me many years ago. I still use shampoo at times though. However, showering with plain water works just fine.

  7. Completely agree Sanne. Never heard of the egg+yogurt combo, do you think it makes a difference in your hair? I've gone thru the rabbit hole of products that ended up thinning or balding my hair and I've sworn it off completely.

  8. It's really easy. You fill a basin with hot water, then beat an egg into it and add some plain yogurt, then use it to wash your hair. Then just rinse it under the shower. That's the only method which really cleanses the hair the way shampoo does (you'll have to scrub yourself quite thoroughly tho). It's probably good for your hair, too.

  9. I mean when you beat the egg and yogurt in the hot water, it creates a kind of foam which you then use to wash your hair.

  10. I generally ignore these because I work out an hour every morning, and am unwilling to forgo my post-exercise shower. I feel unclean and stinky when covered in sweat, and I have to wash as soon as I am done.

I occasionally skip a Sunday shower just because my whole day is super relaxing after church, but...nope.

As for the showering more in summer argument, I live in FL. It is summer 7 months of the year. LOL.
