Do You Really Need Toothpaste?

Amazing enough, no! And it's not my opinion or that of some hippie naturopath, either. Strait out of the mouth of dental health professionals:

While toothpaste manufacturers claim that you need toothpaste to brush your teeth, it’s not true. Toothpaste is not necessary to make your teeth clean or healthy.

Studies have shown that brushing without toothpaste is just as effective in removing plaque and in some cases it’s more effective.

I wonder which other products we use that we are taught are absolutely necessary, but in reality aren't and can even be harmful.

  1. I read a long time ago in The Tightwad Gazette that she didn't always use toothpaste but she said she brushed for five minutes straight. Yes, I do wonder what else we don't need.

  2. Probably sunscreen if you cover yourself. Personally I can't tolerate f50 and f30 doesn't really help if the sun is strong. I bought a couple of cheap hats from Aliexpress and elsewhere and those seem to do just fine. Also makeup. God only knows what they put in that one.

  5. They say that henna is non toxic, though apparently not all the brands. As for mammograms, that's interesting. The pressure to get them is quite high.

  6. There is very little you_need_. You don't need shampoo either. I remember perhaps 20 years ago there was this no-poo method movement. Miracles happen when you give up shampoo.
    As to any of these things the more you use the more you need.

    My mother, her 2 sisters, and my maternal grandmother all had breast cancers (1970-1990's) So there was a great concern and advice for me and my 2 sisters to have mammografs taken every second year. I was having another kind of procedure in a hospital and I asked another opinion should I go on with that advice and the answer was absolutely not! I was ''too young'' for that (in my 30's). I begun to look for alternative information; perhaps it was not genetic at all, perhaps there was a generational reason, something to do with self-esteem or self-perception, passed down. And I found quite interesting information and ''miracle stories''. Needless to say I have not been a good customer regarding mammogram scans. All the advice _may_be_ meant for the good of the people, but it seems to ignite fear, which is not good for anyone.

  7. Miriam, how do you wash your hair then? With plain water? I tried many things through the years but was never really satisfied with the results.

  8. Nowadays I wash 2-3 times a month, with a little bit of shampoo.My son, who is a minimalist by nature uses only water. It probably have different results with different hair types. Mine, as well my son's, hair is ''coarse'' and thick.

    As to alternative way to face illnesses is that everything starts in our consciousness, every thought, intended or not; a feeling, an emotion, they all affect our physical body one way or the other. Dis-ease, as they say.Tension, which goes long enough without being dealt with will surface as a physical symptom. Fear and all the myriad of perceptions it will give you, is the most common cause for illnesses.
    I think it was Angeline Jolie who had her breasts removed after learning that her mother had a gene for breast cancer, if I remember correctly. Fear made her do it for no obvious reason
    There are several books that I have read, people healing completely of cancers which seems to be the boogeyman of today, just by changing their thoughts, learning what the illness is trying to tell them, etc

  11. As you mentioned sunscreen...
    I don't remember the terms or the scientific method I heard but it was simply put like this:
    A person is outside, enjoying sunny weather. A specific kind of sun ray enters through his eye, giving signal to the brain. The brain gives signal to the skin cells to start the protection process.
    If the person wears sunglasses, the ray does not enter the eye nor give signal to the brain and the skin cells are not starting the process, so you burn easily.
    The human mind too many times thinks that something need to be added to solve the problem and sunscreen enter the stage.

    So we don't need sunglasses even though they make us look ''stylish''... A wide-brimmed hat is enough if the sunshine feels too bright, as you have mentioned.

  12. Yes, I have heard about it, but not sure if I 100% agree. Sometimes you need sun glasses, like when skiing. But a hat is a must in summer.
