Are Housewives Lazy?

The younger generation disagrees:

  1. I've always liked the term "homemaker" better than housewife. It makes me wonder if there are yardwives or officewives or barnwives? All women whether single, married, with or without children, can and should be the maker of a home. Some are able to do it full-time, some aren't. Before I got married (at age 30) I loved making my home a place of welcome for friends and family, and hated going to "work". I've been a full-time homemaker since just before our first child was born. Homemaking is my chosen career!

I laughed when I heard the young women in the video quote the writer who said she preferred to be independent. Goodness! I feel more independent as a homemaker than I ever did when I was at the beck and call of an employer! I set the agenda, the timetable, chosing the tasks and deadlines for myself. If it's a beautiful day I can get out and go on a picnic if I want to--an employer wouldn't accept that readily. One might even lose ones job. And "I'm educated" so I can't be a housewife? Good grief, the poor woman is clueless about what it takes to run a household and raise children.

At the end of our lives few, if any, wish they'd spent more time at their job, closed one more deal, or won just one more case. We tend to wish we'd spent more time with our loved ones, more time making happy memories with them and more time at home enjoying our blessings. I'm so thankful for my chosen way of life!

Those young women in the video are wonderful! Thanks for sharing.

  2. You are welcome!

Housewife is a term for an occupation. While everyone, including men will have to do at least some housekeeping, a housewife is the one who does it as her job. With my blog, I'm trying to support housewives as working women get quite enough support imho.

I prefer housewife because it highlights the fact that person in question is a wife. Anybody can be a homemaker. Being a wife is really important thing for me.

  4. Yes, I forgot to mention it. Housewife explicitly refers to women/wives, plus "homemaker" (though I like this word, too) is often used to describe women (and people in general) who work but still kinda do stuff around the house, which can create confusion. For instance, sometimes one comes across a blog about "homemaking" whose owner works full time:)

    Housewife is more specific.
