The thing is, people are wising up to the fact that even if the GOP wins every race and takes a 435–0 majority in the House, nothing changes. Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy will slither over to the White House with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer to swear off partisanship. The lesson of the election, they will tell us, is that the people want the parties to cooperate, with the Democrats getting everything they want.
I'll have to read all of Zman's article, but I do agree that we have reached a point here in the U.S. where it is becoming theater. We're not there yet (as Trump's 2016 election revealed), but we're close.
ReplyDeleteThe problem is that -again, here in the US- our two parties are both fairly corrupt. Additionally, while they put on a good show for us up here in the cheap seats, I believe there are a lot of back room deals are feigned fights of principles where no true principles exist.
There is the occasional rebel who shows up, shakes the apple cart, and sprinkles the pixie dust of hope on things. That keeps us voting. But the reality is that these occasional shakeups (with no real understanding or awakening at the top of among the people), serve to do little more than add a few extra seconds onto the game clock. Excuse the mixed metaphors, :)
Elspeth, I believe the USA is not the only place where this is happening. We have many parties but only a couple are real opposition with practically no chance to ever form the government. The rest are sometimes called "cartel parties" and for a reason...
