This is great news. There are politicians already in Italy, France, and the Netherlands (so far) talking about repeating BREXIT in their own countries!
Mark, we could very well be next. There is a law which mandates the government to call a referendum on any issue, if you collect enough signatures. it's not binding, but still...Anti-Euro sentiment is very strong here, because just as UK we are being used as a cash cow for our Southern neighbours.
You forget Ireland is a northern european country that had to be rescued, not a southern one.
The greek rescue and others had to be paid by southern european countries too, we are also a cash cow.
Do you think it was free for southern european countries to be a member of the EU? We had to give up our industries, our sources of wealth, at least you could keep them.
Anonymous, first, pick up a handle. Anonymous comments aren't allowed on this blog. Second, it's a fact that UK, just as Holland, paid more into the system than it got back. They are already speculating that our taxes will get up to cover for Brexit. How comes that Italy has free medical care for everyone while we have to pay and it's getting more expensive every year. My husband has to work till 68 while in some countries they were retiring at 62. The system obviously doesn't work. Further, your country is the one which has practically no Eurosceptic movements as opposed to Italy, France, Austria, Greece you name it. So obviously, most people still enjoy the EU. Fine, it's their good right. it's also the good right of others not to.
I was very happy to hear the news from Britain. I listened to reports from both sides and decided what I would do if I had a vote. I could not know the real whole story though not having lived through living under the E.U. rules. I am glad to come here and also listen to what you here have to say on the subject. I hope there is not a revote as some say some of the voters want now. There is no telling what will happen in our November elections here in the United States. I can hardly believe what an odd election cycle we are having. How it will turn out no one but God knows. How our country will be left after the next 4 years is also up for speculation. When running for office the then Mr. Obama said he as President would fundamentally change America. He did that alright. That is one promise he kept and followed through. Whether the voters wanted it or not. He did. Politicians get so detached with the reality their people live. Like all celebrity types they end up having their own 'yes men" around them and live in their own circle of friends and workers and have no clue about the rest of us. We will have to wait and see how this vote in Europe will change other countries wishes. I hope it makes people rethink and study what is really happening. If they are allowed to make any changes they do so with serious thought. Too many do not take voting seriously. Their families into the future, will be affected by how they run their countries and who runs them. What they stand for and what they believe. I hope your country will let it's people run it as they want. Sarah
Sarah, most wealthy liberals live in the gated communities or an equivalent thereof and don't have to experience the consequences of mass immigration, job loss or crime. Their contempt for the working class folks is palpable. Talk is cheap when it costs you nothing. It's not their children who suffer.
Well, you see Marietta the idea of the common market and no borders between (some) European countries wasn't really a bad one, however, it morphed into a quasi-Empire. We can trade with each other without becoming one big pan-European country. Add to this the red tape, the very real differences between various cultures, corruption, immigration crisis...Though it would be wrong to say that I represent the opinion of all Europeans:) Obviously, some still like EU. I will admit that if it consisted of fewer countries with similar culture and work ethic and was better run it could be perhaps not such a bad idea at all.

I really appreciated your blog and I didn't want to start a fight, I just wanted to tell some things that weren't accurate to southern european countries and to the causes of the lack of eurosceptic movements in my country. I just wanted to say that we all have lost but speacially southern european countries contrary to what is thought, I don't know why my comment was deleted

ReplyDeleteThe Russian media reported that around 60% of the Dutch favor holding a referendum, so that's a good sign that it's possible!
