A Medieval Dance

  1. Very nice dance. I love medieval dances, some of them appear in Grimm stories that were filmed.
Have a look at this film at minute 14:27 (Prinz Goldkoernchen - not Grimm story but very nice)

  2. Alexandra, thanks for the link, looks like a very interesting movie! I like medieval stuff, too, just not too much of it, probably due to visiting several torture chambers in old castles:)

  3. Yes, you're right, but some things are nice. These are remembered with great joy in stories and legends. I like how Germans make nice movies from stories. There is a series "Sonntagsmaerchen" that I have watched again and again on youtube. I like the slightly comic approach that the movies contain exactly in scenes with medieval royalty and stuff. My favorite Maerchen is "Koenig Drosselbart". I love the music especially.

  4. Hey, I was just kidding about torture chambers:) Every society has its dark sides, just look at what's happening in our enlightened times!

I know Koenig Drosselbart, but i haven't seen the movie, I'm afraid.

  5. The best part of these movies is nice music combined with good actors and nice plot. The story is respected but with little comic scenes that tease you into watching. Koenig Drosselbart is so nice because there is a paralel serious plot that coexists with the comic part. I just love it. And also because of the nice white German Noble goat that has a special role in this movie. The princess has to live with a poor Spielmann in a cottage without servants, remember?

  6. Yes, I remember the story. Germany has so many historical places, old castles, old towns, it used to be such a beautiful country, pains me to read what it's turning into.

I enjoyed both the dance and music. I wish dancing was still something like that, or maybe minuet or such. I like dancing but I hate it if I have to "hug" somebody while dancing. Except my husband, of course. Holding hands is quite enough for me, thank you very much. :) I always love the dancing scenes in Jane Austen -films.

We participated once a ballroom dancing course, and people really raised their eyebrows when I refused to dance with other men.

  8. Jane Austen type dances look rather complicated to me:) Modern style dancing probably became with waltz, which was originally criticised for being immodest, I believe. As a result, gentlemen were supposed to dance it with one arm behind their back initially.

I actually saw in one Anna Karenina film how men danced waltz that way. I thought it was some weird russian habit... It must have been very difficult for the woman to follow that way.

  10. Yeah, I've seen it in a couple of films, too. I believe it's historically correct, as it was considered lewd to hug your dance partner.

  11. At least, in the beginning, when waltz was first introduced, later folks got accustomed to it, I guess.
